Hail to the Chief – De presidentiële hymne

Als de Amerikaanse president tijdens officiële gelegenheden zijn opwachting maakt, speelt de United States Marine Band vaak het Hail to the Chief. Dit muziekstuk, in 1812 gecomponeerd door James Sanderson, staat ook wel bekend als de presidentiële hymne.

De muziek is geïnspireerd op een oude Schotse melodie. De tekst, een bewerking van Walter Scotts The Lady of the Lake, is van de hand van de Amerikaanse auteur Albert Gamse. Tijdens presidentiële inauguraties wordt het lied traditioneel ook gespeeld. Voorafgaand worden altijd vier zogeheten ‘Ruffles and flourishes’ gespeeld, zoals hieronder ook te horen in een uitvoering van de U.S. Army Herald Trumpets:

Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all.
Hail to the Chief, as we pledge cooperation
In proud fulfillment of a great, noble call.
Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, that’s our strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one we selected as commander,
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!

De hymne wordt genoemd in het lied “Fortunate Son” van Creedence Clearwater Revival, wanneer verwezen wordt naar Amerikaanse patriotten:

“Some folks are born made to wave the flag
They’re red, white and blue
And when the band plays “Hail to the Chief”
They point the cannon at you, Lord.”

Vice-president

De vice-president van de Verenigde Staten heeft een eigen hymne: Hail, Columbia. Dit lied is nog wat ouder. Het werd in 1789 geschreven door Philip Phile. Tot in de twintigste eeuw werd dit muziekstuk door velen beschouwd als het on-officiële volkslied van Amerika. In 1931 kregen de Verenigde Staten echter een ander nationaal volkslied: de Star Spangled Banner.
